A seasoned, award-winning journalist, Euna Lee is a Special Assistant to the VOA Director and Deputy Director and is responsible for the strategic direction of VOA’s video production for OTT, social media, mobile and other platforms aiming to increase the impact of VOA video around the world. Lee joined Voice of America in January 2017 and built the Korean service’s first TV team. As the executive producer, she successfully launched and oversaw 7 original TV programs that quickly grew in viewership. She led the Korean service to one of the top 10 VOA channels on YouTube within a year. Lee was appointed Special Assistant in August 2019. Prior to VOA, she worked for Fusion media, AJ+ and Al Jazeera TV networks where her videos reached more than 3 million viewers. Lee’s name became widely known after being captured by North Korea while filming for a human trafficking documentary for Current TV, a cable network co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore. She wrote a memoir, “The World is Bigger Now”, about her experience while detained in North Korea for four and a half months. Lee has received various awards for her fearless work, including Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year award in 2009. Lee holds a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
